Roller derby trinkets and dinkets

Tote bag galore. I drew this one for the Pink Ribbon bout. My rolling ways have been put on hold for a while because a. my right knee is unreliable and b. I’m sorting my pseudo professional life out. Turns out sitting in the studio and working for the boss lady takes up most of my days.

(Tell you a little secret, I didn’t take this picture. I own this crud sony ericsson phone that only looks smart. I like pasting post-it notes to the back of the phone. I like making notes.)

The bird is the word

Last week I opened a big box of oil paints. It’s a gift for someone who believes the bird ìs the word. It took forever to dry. Then I tried to varnish the painting and I brushed the top half away. It was supposed to say 2012 but I guess ‘Liesbeth De Stercke 2’ is okay too. Lesson learned in patience!

Nobrow#6 The Double

My two cents for Nobrow#6.

Nobrow has asked over 60 artists to contribute work to the theme of Doubles or Doppelgangers. Doubles have appeared in theatre, literature and mythology from our earliest written records. From Greek and Norse Mythology to Shelly, Dostoevsky, Donne and Goethe the idea has held a tantalising grip on the human imagination, fascinating and terrorising us in equal measure. Now Nobrow turned it over to 60 illustrators and graphic storytellers to interpret it as they wish, each, taking on one ‘double’ page spread.

Super Villain

This is my entry revolving around super badasses. Paul is the son of an industrialist, who owns a crime factory. He is living in a super modern home, an idea I picked up from James Bond movies. His cat Pickles never leaves the top of the closet except for pooping on the carpet and scratching his Northern Soul records (the really rare ones). His goons are bored and ultraviolent. He takes them out dancing and to steal scooters. His girlfriends take turns sitting on the back of his Lambretta.

‘Super Villain’ is a group expo by Rotopol Press in Kassel, Germany. ‘Super Villain’ starts the 25th of November ‘till the 11th of February 2012.

Four days, two pages

Upper left corner: I drew this one in the Yale Center of British Art, in a room filled with paintings of sea battles and ships and wild seas. Some had extravagant framework with cannons and fishnets and pirates, but those frames were way too intricate to draw.

Down left is my favorite dinosaur. Stripped naked!

Half the pressure, twice the speed

Today was a happy one. I went to the airport to pick up my boyfriend, who was flying in from Miami and didn’t know I’d be waiting at arrivals. He brought me a little something something!

A couple of days before I asked him to order some Palomino Blackwings 602 pencils. When I went to New York, I searched art supply stores, because I wanted to try one so bad! Couldn’t find one. Today I got a whole box as my birthdaygift! Now I’m the proud owner of a deluxe edition with 24 pencils and sharpener.

I’ve been curious about these pencils after reading blogs comparing the pencil with the Eberhard Blackwing 602These were produced since the 1930’s up until 1998 and have been a favorite among artists and writers. John Steinbeck used many Eberhard Blackwing 602 pencils for writing East of Eden and the Grapes of Wrath. They’re very sought after now, an original unsharpened Blackwing pencil costs over $25. But hey, I’m leaving the originals to the collectors. I’m happy to try out the recreation!

Inspiration

Guess who’s inspired by wooden gingerbread moulds? Me. I’m going to make some. Those textures and the folklore themes keep me hooked!
